What Is the Carmen Benevolent Trust?
The Worshipful Company of Carmen Benevolent Trust CIO is the Livery’s vehicle for benevolence and philanthropy. It is often referred to as the ‘CBT’ (Carmen Benevolent Trust), ‘The Benevolent Trust’ or ‘The Ben Trust.’
Benevolence is at the heart of the Carmen. Like all City Livery Companies, Carmen are very much involved in supporting people and institutions in need, as well as causes associated with the industries which give rise to the Livery – transport and logistics.
As a Carman, this is YOUR Trust. But it can only do its work on behalf of the Livery satisfactorily if it has YOUR financial support.
Who the Trust Helps
The Trust’s seven trustees ensure that income is used to support education, transport and logistics, City institutions and the relief of hardship among Carmen and their dependants. “Education” includes scholarships for disadvantaged students as well as support for state schools and colleges (chiefly in London) to help them ensure their work is truly inclusive.
Carmen’s support of education includes the following.
- Supporting state schools
- Supporting initiatives which help secure a future for young people
- Supporting community initiatives that open up education and employment opportunities
- Supporting pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds who attend schools connected with the City of London
- Paying for specialist equipment at the Treloar School and College for Disabled Young People
- Finding two London schools, to provide support for refugees from Ukraine in the UK
How the Trust Is Run
Your Trust is run by seven trustees who are appointed by the Court, having regard to a list of recommended persons supplied by the existing trustees. All are Liverymen, with at least two being members of the Court. They are:
- Past Senior Warden Iain Golder (Chairman)
- Liveryman Chris Godbold (Hon. Secretary)
- Past Assistant Stephen Rinsler (Hon. Treasurer)
- Liveryman Sharon Kindleysides
- Past Master David Pugsley
- Assistant Paul Sainthouse
- Vacant
How You Can Help
Your Trust’s support of education, our industries and the relief of hardship can only happen with the support of Carmen themselves. By far the best way to offer this support is through a regular standing order. These ensure that we can meet our regular commitments but we also welcome one-off donations, of course.
This is where you come in…
